The black community upholds the patriarchal by adultifying Black Girls
Black people use aspects of the patriarchy to express hierarchy. Everyone can understand racism but refuses to understand that blaming children for the adults being attracted to them is oppressive. The misogynoir Black girls face is rooted in the Jezebel archetype and the infantilization of predatory Black men under the guise of protecting them from white supremacy. Protect black men is a saying that was used to bring awareness to the racial and systemic violence black men are subjected to. Now this same saying is being used to disregard the need for holding male predators and abusers accountable for inflicting harm on the community.
The adultification of Black girls is used to uphold patriarchal values within the black community. Unfortunately, Black women are some of the perpetrators of the hypersexualization of Black girls and protectors of predators. As a child villainized for being preyed on, I have seen that Black women are heavily involved in upholding and protecting Black patriarchal values. The knights of Black patriarchy often place blame on Black girls because of a misogynoir outlook that casts Black girls as competition for the attention of men. We have been in an epidemic of male-centered pedophile and abuser apologists.
Recently, Kendra Scott shot and murdered a 20-year-old who was hiding underneath her 13 year older daughter bed. I, for one, think she did the right thing. Many people are trying to find an excuse for the 20-year-old and even calling the child fast for being in contact with the adult in question. The refusal to ask why he was engaging in conversation of this nature with a child is being disregarded. I thought this was bizarre at first, but seeing how people are responding to Scott’s actions has illustrated that the Black community puts limitations on which Black girls are deserving of protection. Rehabilitation is a big part of the conversation around predators, but I believe that the attraction to children cannot and should not be rehabilitated.
A few months ago, the topic of femicide and abuse within the community was the center of attention, and now that the victim is the grooming of a young Black girl, Black women are aligning themselves with the abuser by calling the child fast. Honestly, we shouldn’t be surprised at how many of our own align with predators and abusers when certain abusers were thriving and supported for years. For example, the amount of disregard people have for the crimes and abusive actions Robert Kelly has committed against children and women just to listen to his music is egregious. This also includes calling the children fast and blaming the parents of said children instead of Robert. I would like for black people to do better in this area, but from the current discourse happening right now, I won’t hold my breath.
Black girls deserve protection not just in theory but in practice. Black women specifically should understand this statement, but to many of us, are male-centered. I am disappointed.
